It's
this sort of movie that's often the most difficult to write about.
Sequel
Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows isn't terrible but it isn't
fabulous either.
It
offers a steam-punky good time full of stylistic, slo-mo splosions
and silliness. However, the Christmas ham was likely to linger longer
in your fridge than this flick's improbable plot will stay in your
memory.
This
is a furiously fast-paced action movie, for some reason set in
Victorian England with a main character whose name coincidentally (or
perhaps ironically) matches the name of a famous fictional detective.
The
legendary, slow, thoughtful deductive processes of Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle's famous character are ignored throughout the story, then
mashed together in a breakneck montage at the end, almost as an
afterthought. This is the thriller and action movie of the year. From

These
deductive processes are what make the books special to many Holmes
fans. As a friend and Holmes fan noted: without them the film was
just Lock, Stock and one ''Little Hansel'' [the big cannon used
during a slo-mo fight in Germany].
Holmes's
love interest from 2009's Sherlock Holmes, played by Rachel McAdams
is disposed of in the intro, setting the elaborate game afoot, while
Dr Watson (Jude Law) is revealed to be on the eve of his wedding.
His
best man Holmes has forgotten to arrange the stag do, so drags his
brother Mycroft (Fry) and Watson to a den of iniquity where Holmes
tracks down a gypsy Simza (Noomi Rapace, star of the Swedish Girl
With the Dragon Tattoo movie trilogy) who is somehow connected with
an evil plot that may threaten Europe's fragile peace.
Aside
from the gypsy fortune-teller, the plot involves murdering a doctor,
Holmes' love interest (other than his bromance with Watson, that is)
and a German arms dealer, blowing up people in Paris and
assassinating a bigwig in Switzerland.
